What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis? What Should You Know about It?

You might have heard about Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT before, but how much do you know about it? This article will cover some facts about DVT that hopefully will be helpful for those who wish to learn or understand more about it. Deep vein thrombosis is a condition where there’s a clot of blood inside a vein located deep within someone’s leg. The dangerous part about this condition is the sole fact that this clot might break off anytime, causing the clot to course through someone’s bloodstream. As a result, there is a high risk that the clot will stuck in the lungs or blocking blood circulation in general, causing organ damages and death.

The Symptoms of DVT

When you notice a swollen area below someone’s knee or even yours, you might need to get it checked immediately as that is the most common symptom of deep vein thrombosis. If it is followed by tenderness, redness, or pain around the clotted area, then it is a high time to get it checked as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the symptoms won’t always make themselves clear and most people who have DVT don’t even realise that they have one.

The Causes of DVT

An injury, surgery, or even autoimmune system might cause deep vein thrombosis as these things are capable of damaging the vein’s inner lining. Also, if your blood flows slowly or is thick, then you’ll have twice as much risk factor for getting DVT. People who also have certain genetic disorder or have more oestrogen hormones in their system are likelier to get blood clots either.
