Understanding Binge Eating Disorder: Overview, Causes, and Treatment

There are a number of binge eating disorder facts that most people have not aware of. One of the common misconception is to liken a binge eating disorder to an occasional overeating. It is not uncommon for most people to overeat from time to time, but when it gets so frequent that the person has to overeat on a regular basis over three months or more, then it could be a sign of a binge eating disorder. People who have this disorder feel that they don’t have control over how much they are eating and even what they are eating. They tend to eat alone until they feel really sick or when they are not feeling hungry. After the person is done with their bingeing, they usually will feel shame, sadness, disgust, and guilt and try to hide it from their family and friends.

This is different with bulimia, even though they do share some signs. People who has bulimia overeat in a regular basis, and they would feel the same negative emotions as the people with binge eating disorder do. But the difference is that people with bulimia will try to purge it afterwards, using diuretics and laxatives, or making them vomit. Purging is not noticed in a binge eating disorder.

The Causes and Treatments

The cause of Binge Eating Disorder is still debatable and cannot be pinpointed for sure. But experts have proposed a number of mixed factors such as the person’s psychology, genes, and background. Dieting might trigger this type of disorder and sometimes it is also the result of a reversed over-consciousness over one’s own body image. Nevertheless, treatment is definitely possible. If someone is diagnosed with a binge eating disorder, then they would be treated by a psychiatrist or other psychological counsellor with managing their thoughts and feelings about food.
