Medical Treatments to Relieve Menstrual Pain

Medical treatments for menstrual pain are mostly needed for women who can’t bear the severe pain during menstrual period. Treatments will help to relieve the symptoms or affecting the psychological mechanism behind the pains or cramps. These following medicines are the common treatments to relieve the pain.

1. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) is effective to relieve pain for 17-95% of women. NSAIDs work by reducing cyclo-oxgenase pathways activity to inhibit the of production prostaglandin. The side effects of NSAIDs include gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that still tolerable. 

2. Simple Analgesics

Simple analgesics including paracetamol and aspirin are useful as alternative when taking NSAIDs are contraindicated. It also works the same with NSAIDs to relieve the pain. Paracetamol also can be taken when NSAIDs alone isn’t enough to take away the pain.

3. Oral Contraceptives

In some studies found that low dose of oral contraceptives can reduce pain compared with placebo. You can also take them in combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) that usually in the form of pill, patch, and ring. CHC will help to reduce your period in a year while in the same time reduce the number of times you feel the pain. The other contraceptives alternatives are progesterone contraceptives and intrauterine system (IUS).
